I typed Emily Alston Kane into the search engine. A dozen hits popped up on the screen. Newspaper articles from The Denver Post, the Colorado Springs Gazette, and the Summit County Daily. Then the hits came from the papers on the west coast, the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post Intelligencer. The Missoula Independent screamed headlines, “Mystery Death: Wife’s Fatal Plunge” and “Socialite Dives to her Death.” Story after story from the center of the country to the west coast scrolled across my screen. I read with morbid fascination.

A picture of Hunter and Emily took most of the column, inches above the fold of the front page of the Summit County paper. Emily with her upswept hair and sequined black evening gown smiled into the camera. Behind her stood a younger Hunter in his tuxedo, his hands resting lightly on her shoulders. The headline read, “Husband’s Version of Death Arouses Suspicion.” My stomach roiled. Her face, my face, stared eerily at me. Was that why you asked me to go riding and to picnic with you? Because I look enough like Emily to pass for her?

I couldn’t stop reading the reporter’s story. My god, he’d interviewed friends, colleagues, business members of the community. They had gone to their Beaver Lodge condo in Colorado where they hiked the trail to Eccles Pass. The couple who ran the deli reported that Emily and Hunter talked about seeing the lupines blooming in the meadows on the way to the summit. Three days later, the couple asked them to make their favorite sandwiches for their hike back to the top of the pass. Hunter excitedly told them Emily wanted to take pictures.
